Dreams really do come true

St. Francis High School musical has American Idol twist in Depression-era story

Wheaton, IL – 5 April 2007 – Dreams of having a “big break” and starring on stage are not new. The musical production 42 nd Street staged the story of ambition and heartbreak among singers and dancers seventy-five years before TV’s American Idol came on the scene.

Eighty-three students will perform 42 nd Street” Thursday through Sunday, April 12-15, in the Kuhn Cultural Arts Center at St. Francis High School in Wheaton. Dozens of other students will work behind-the-scenes.

David Merrick’s quintessential "backstage" musical, 42nd Street, traces the story of a Broadway musical comedy, from casting call to opening night

It’s 1933, the height of the Depression, and work is scarce. Aspiring performers flock to the audition at the 42 nd Street Theatre for a chance to be in a new show. The extravaganza, Pretty Lady, is being produced by a successful Broadway director played by Dan Hugar of Roselle . The star of the production is an aging diva, which has been dual cast with Elizabeth Conner of St. Charles and Lindsay Pyrcik of Lisle, whose unexpected accident might close the show. The show’s leading man, Michael Ferraro of Lisle, recognizes the talent of a new starry-eyed chorus girl played by Kathryn Bauer of Wheaton. Together, with the rest of the cast, they endure grueling song and dance rehearsals so the show can go on.

Carolyn Brady , Director of Theatre Productions, directs the St. Francis spring musical production.

Five performances are Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m.; and, Sunday, April 15 at 3:00 p.m. Ticket costs are $8 for Students/Seniors and $10 for Adults. To order tickets, call St. Francis at 668-5800 x 130
or purchase tickets online at http://www.sfhsonline.org/42street2007.html . Online ticket orders will stop on Wednesday, April 11 at 3:00 p.m.

Students broaden view of global hunger and poverty

St. Francis High School Lenten project embraced by student body

Wheaton, IL – 15 March 2007 – For students at St. Francis High School in Wheaton, building awareness of global hunger and poverty has become a school-wide priority.

In January, students launched a grassroots campaign to educate their peers about the plight of the people of Darfur in Sudan. The program led to the entire school’s participation in Operation Rice Bowl, the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services.

Once a week during Lent, St. Francis Peer Ministry students focus student body attention on the needs of a country through banners, presentations, activities and prayer services. Their goal is to raise awareness of those who struggle with hunger and poverty around the world. Countries and regions that are being featured are Darfur, Mexico, Pakistan, Angola, Cambodia and Niger.

The students are also leading fund-raising efforts for Operation Rice Bowl each week in homerooms. Funds will be used to support agricultural enrichment, water sanitation, maternal and child health, job training and more. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised at St. Francis will remain in the Diocese of Joliet to help support local hunger and poverty alleviation projects.

Commenting on the Lenten project, Diane Mercadante, the school’s Director of Pastoral Ministry, said, “All of this effort began with students who were independently concerned about Darfur. Our emphasis is more on awareness of global issues, solidarity with the poor around the world, and alms giving rather than actual money raised.”

She continued, “This is a tangible way for our students to look at global issues through the lens of Catholic social teaching. We are inviting students to see the world with new eyes and are challenging them to respond.”

Operation Rice Bowl was begun 32 years ago as a response to the drought in the African Sahel. Funds raised by Operation Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Services development projects in 40 countries around the world. All of the projects are designed to uphold human dignity and encourage self-reliance for the project participants.

A primary goal of the St. Francis High School Pastoral Ministry program is to help students integrate service actions as everyday experiences of the Christian lifestyle. St. Francis students are regularly invited to serve others through a variety of opportunities that are posted on the school’s website at www.sfhsnet.org.

“Happily Ever After” can have consequences

St. Francis High School production explores the dark side of happy endings

Wheaton, IL – 28 October 2006 – Fairy tales don’t typically address the consequences of events leading to traditional happy endings. The production “Into the Woods” faces the fallout and demonstrates that wishes can be dangerous.

Twenty-nine students will perform “Into the Woods” Friday through Sunday, November 3-5, in the Kuhn Cultural Arts Center at St. Francis High School in Wheaton. Dozens of other students will work behind-the-scenes.

Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award winning show, “Into the Woods,” blends familiar fairy tales of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood with an original story of a Baker, performed by Tommy Malouf of Roselle, and his Wife, acted by Emily Neigel of Wheaton. Samantha Joseph of Wheaton is the witch who has cursed the couple with childlessness. The Baker and his Wife must fulfill various missions involving fairy tale characters to break the spell.

By the end of Act I, the couple has overcome obstacles, the spell is broken and all characters seem poised to live "Happily Ever After." Then in Act II, everyone must deal with the pitfalls of the gluttony and greed that led to their "happy endings." As the characters unite to face a threat, they realize that all actions have consequences and discover that interdependence of community and family is their greatest strength.

Carolyn Brady, Director of Theatre Productions, who held student auditions in early September, directs the St. Francis fall production. (A comment or observation from Carolyn could be included here. How many productions has she directed at SFHS? Do these performances typically SELL OUT?)

Performances are Friday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m.; and, Sunday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. Ticket costs are $8 for Students/Seniors and $10 for Adults. To order tickets, call St. Francis at 668-5800 x 130

St. Francis High School student earns coveted slot on All-State Theatre Crew

Wheaton, IL – 8 September 2006 – Behind-the-scenes efforts of a tech crew is what makes a theatre production tick. That’s where Matt Lorch of Glen Ellyn learned stage lighting skills to earn a position on the All-State Crew for this year’s Illinois High School Theatre Festival.

The junior from St. Francis High School in Wheaton was recently named to the crew after auditions for the 2007 all-state production of Les Miserables. The highly competitive selection process took place last June with applications from students throughout Illinois. The production will take place in January.

“Matt proved himself as responsible, dedicated, and creative while he learned the ropes freshman year. Because he was passionate about the work and proved himself through countless hours of hanging lights, teaching others, and perfecting cues, he became the student-in-charge of lighting for our productions as well as other school-related functions. He has quite an impressive portfolio of experience! We are very proud of him,” commented Carolyn Brady Riley, Director of St. Francis Theatre Productions.

The St. Francis theatre program is locally renowned. "We are fortunate at St. Francis to offer our theatre students hands-on opportunities in technical theatre. The Kuhn Cultural Arts Center is a state-of-the-art facility. We offer our kids a glimpse of what working in a professional theatre situation is like by putting them in the driver's seat,” Brady continued.

The Illinois High School Theatre Festival is the largest and oldest non-competitive high school theatre festival in the world. The annual three-day festival takes place in early January and switches locations between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Illinois State University. During the event, over 4,000 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors, and volunteers perform over 25 different productions and about 150 workshops.

Other highlights of the annual festival include college/university auditions for high school seniors, professional development for teachers, a student film festival and the annual all-state production, featuring student cast, crew, and orchestra members from across the state.

The idea for a theatre festival was conceived by a group of high school teachers in the mid-1970s. In 1976, the first Illinois High School Theatre Festival was held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with nearly 1500 high school students and teachers attending.

St. Francis High School alumni return as school parents 25 years later

Wheaton, IL – 1 September 2006 – Returning to their alma mater as school parents never crossed their minds w hen Valerie (Serwach) Bruggeman, Cathy (Kinsella) Collinsand Mary (Cronin) Spatz graduated from St. Francis High School in 1981.

The trio returned to register their firstborn children at the high school in Wheaton last month. They reminisced at the school’s annual coffee for mothers of incoming freshmen

“I can’t believe my daughter Megan is going to be a freshman at my high school,” Bruggeman exclaimed. In fact, during the late seventies and early eighties, St. Francis also served as the junior high that she attended.

Megan Bruggeman always anticipated enrolling at St. Francis. Her father Ken is also a St. Francis alum, Class of ‘77. School has just begun and Megan already has a favorite course. “I love math because the small class size means we get a lot of attention,” she said. Megan was also selected for the volleyball team.

When Bailey Collins looked at high schools, smaller class sizes and her mother Cathy’s memories of the family-welcoming atmosphere at St. Francis were a major consideration. Before classes started, Bailey became a campus regular as she attended summer practices as a new Spartan cheerleader.

Mary Spatz, a cheerleader in 1981 will now cheer from the stands for her son, who is on the freshman football team. “Joining the football team this summer was a great way to make new friends at St. Francis,” Ryan Spatz said.

With the help of the freshman orientation program, all three students have made a smooth transition into the St. Francis community. Their parents are looking forward to jumping back into school life too.

“Building Our Future” is a major Capital Campaign to shape the future of the St. Francis educational experience. Fr. John Sebahar will preside at a kick-off liturgy and ceremony for the program on Sunday, October 15, at St. Francis High School

Plans for the “Building Our Future” program have been developed and refined for nearly two years. St. Francis parents, alumni, faculty and staff and the business community were invited to participate in the planning process.

Sister Sheila Megley RSM, president of St. Francis, commented about the combined input of the St. Francis community. “We must all be about living our heritage and moving it forward so other generations will know that we added to the traditions, saved what is sacred, and are entrusting it to others.”

St. Francis High School was the first co-institutional Catholic high school in the Midwest. The efforts of parents and three religious orders to build St. Francis began in 1955, when it was designed to be a regional high school to serve neighboring parishes. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in 1956 and first classes began in 1957. Since then, over 7,400 have graduated from St. Francis. This year, the student population is over 750.

Summer renovations transform dreams to reality
St. Francis High School unveils major facility improvements

Wheaton, IL  – 21 August 2006 – Parents will soon see the major facility improvements that greeted their children on their first day back to St. Francis High School in Wheaton.

They will experience the school’s newly established Music Room, renovated Slant Dome gym and relocated Fitness Center during Curriculum Night, Thursday, August 31. St. Francis completed the major renovations this summer as part of the institution’s continuing commitment to improve learning environments for students and faculty.

First, the Fitness Center was relocated and updated in time to train young athletes attending sports camps beginning last June. "We've got a weight room fit for a university. We love the new location being in the gym because it has completely cut out any distractions," stated Bobby Bennett, head football coach.

All students, as well as, athletes and physical education classes, will have access to 46 stations of fitness equipment now located in the 3,800 square foot mezzanine area of the Spyglass Athletic Center. A 10-foot walkway overlooks Spyglass and will be used for the pep band, taping of games and media representatives.

"Our updated, expansive fitness center affords great flexibility in teaching current wellness concepts in both our Physical Education curriculum and athletics," commented Peg Kopec, PE department chair. Attention to the physical well being of students is a co-curricular complement to the academic and spiritual development of the young people at St. Francis.

The space previously occupied by the Fitness Center was used to create a dedicated Music Room. The new facility features a studio-like atmosphere for aspiring musicians and singers. State-of-the-art soundproofing will permit simultaneous group work, individual instruction and solo practice.

Bob Mamminga, St. Francis band director, commented, “Having a permanent space means more time for teaching and the multiple practice spaces means more students will have access to instruction.” He estimates that 200-300 students will immediately benefit from the new music facilities. About 750 students attend the school.

Lastly, the Slant Dome gym has been renovated into a multi-purpose facility. The new flooring, bleachers, state-of-the-art sound system and portable in-door batting cages will enhance a variety of school activities ranging from dances and liturgies to competitive sporting events and PE activities.

Marty Ford, former campus minister, is excited about the impact the new multi-purpose room will have. “With the new seating and improved sound system, liturgy will be more enjoyable and welcoming,” he said.

Tours of the newly renovated facilities will be offered to alumni and friends of St. Francis High School after their Homecoming football game on Friday, September 29. The tours are part of many celebration activities planned to mark the school’s 50th Anniversary during this year.

Funding for the renovation projects was made possible through benefactor gifts to the St. Francis High School Annual Appeal and Special Projects Fund last year.

Sisters of Mercy award grant to St. Francis High School

Pastoral Ministry programs to receive funding support

Wheaton, IL – 17 August 2006 – St. Francis High School’s commitment to teach young people to be responsible citizens of the world has earned financial support from the Sisters of Mercy, Regional Community of Chicago. Thanks to a $10,000 grant, the school’s Pastoral Ministry programs will be enhanced in 2007.

The Sisters of Mercy grant comes from the order’s Agatha O’Brien Ministry Fund. Over the last ten years the order has awarded 140 grants to various ministries in which their Sisters or Associates are involved to actively work to create a compassionate, caring society.

Service for others is integral to the St. Francis High School’s culture. Annual efforts begin as early as the first week of school where admission to the first dance is a food donation to benefit the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton.

“Through actions, our young people are coming of age with an awareness that what they do, how they act, and who they are, does make a difference in this world,” remarked Sister Sheila Megley, RSM, President of St. Francis.

The ideals and words of its patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi, “It is in giving that we receive,” are at the core of pastoral ministries at the Catholic high school in Wheaton. St. Francis actively encourages and cultivates service participation by the entire school community – students, faculty and staff, families and alumni.

St. Francis Pastoral Ministry activities also foster leadership development, community building, peace and social justice awareness and faith formation. Commented Diane Mercadante, Director of Pastoral Ministry, “It is our goal to have 100% of our student body involved in activities related to ministry during the 2006-2007 school year.”

Other service efforts last year included collecting toys for children living in poverty in DuPage and Kane Counties, implementing a walk-a-thon to raise funds for a Katrina-devastated high school in Mississippi, and traveling to rural Appalachia to provide housing repairs for needy residents.

Summer camp results hint at school’s music program growth

St. Francis High School Drumline wows the crowd at a Kane County Cougars game

Wheaton , IL – 16 August 2006 – Summer camp percussionists appearing at a recent Kane County Cougars baseball game are an indication of music program growth at St. Francis High School in Wheaton .

This was the first time St. Francis Drumline Camp participants performed at the baseball venue. They entertained attendees with pre-game cadences and during the playing of the national anthem. Many of the campers, ranging from 7 th to 12th grades, are student members of the two-year-old St. Francis Pep Band. Next fall, they will play for a University of Illinois half-time football audience.

St. Francis is completing the creation of a dedicated music room this summer. The new facilities feature a studio-like atmosphere for aspiring musicians and singers.

Mamminga has been an active participant in St. Francis’ expansion of their fine arts program. Last year he introduced guitar classes and the Pep Band. He also began the Drumline Camp.

The new music room will be unveiled for parents of incoming students on Curriculum Night, August 31. They will also have the opportunity to view the school’s two other major summer renovation projects. The Slant Dome gym is being renovated into a multi-purpose facility and the Fitness Center was relocated and updated.

From paddles to paddy wagon …

St. Francis High School students discover many faces of France

Wheaton, IL – 8 August 2006 – Forget packaged European tours. Teacher Sue Harsa transforms vacations into adventures for French students at St. Francis High School in Wheaton.

Harsa led a group of 33 students and 5 teacher chaperones through an experiential journey during her annual trip to France in July. Activities were combined with each site experience.

Travelers rode bicycles through Versailles gardens; kayaked under the Pont du Gard in Provence; went horseback riding in the Camargue, an area famous for horses born black which turn totally white; and, closely examined sculptures and paintings during a scavenger hunt in the Louvre Museum. At the Normandy beaches, Carolyn Brady Riley, director of theater productions at St. Francis, sang the National Anthem where young American soldiers climbed the cliffs at the Point du Hoc.

In Paris, Harsa accompanied student Julie Nawroth (West Chicago) to the police station to report a lost passport. Afterwards, when she asked police officers where to catch a cab, the gendarmes generously drove them back to their hotel in a paddy wagon.

To lay groundwork for the trip, St. Francis students were required to attend 7:00 a.m. preparation classes for eight months. Lessons ranged from how to ride the subway to studying the historical significance of sites they would see. Three honors students shared their biographical research on the road.

Mary Deneen (Naperville) researched Marie Antoinette and contributed as a tour guide in Versailles and at the Conciergierie. Molly Olsen (Wheaton) learned about soccer star “Zidane” to share French enthusiasm for this summer’s World Cup. Danielle Surch’s (Wheaton) study of Grace Kelly enriched a morning expedition to Monaco.

Harsa has taught at St. Francis for 27 years and is the Foreign Language Department chair. She believes that “a teacher’s vocation is not just to disseminate information, but to instill a passion and enthusiasm” in students. She has been taking young people to France for over 30 years. Students have used their experiences in careers ranging from teaching and nursing in Canada to International Business and International Law.

Trading cell phones for hammers

St. Francis High School students put on work gloves in Appalachia

Wheaton, IL – 7 August 2006 – Some teenagers look forward to coasting through the dog days of summer by hanging out with friends. Students from St. Francis High School in Wheaton seized the opportunity to live without air conditioning, without cell phones, without videogames and without shopping to help residents in rural Appalachia.

St. Francis teens recently spent long hot hours helping those in need in Salem, West Virginia. Ashley Yergovich, (Warrenville), Monica Fazekas (St. Charles), Audrey Lang (Wheaton), Christine Mier (Naperville) and Matt Lukitsh (West Chicago) were joined by St. Francis teacher Michael Page (Geneva) and alumna Meg Rigney, (Lombard) This was the third trip undertaken through the school since 2003.

Another group of St. Francis students from St. Michael’s Church in Wheaton shared similar Nazareth Farm experiences this summer. They included Brian Beck (Wheaton), Bob Vonderhaar (Wheaton), Karen Hanley (Wheaton), Lindsey Schmitt (Wheaton), and Brett Anderson (Wheaton).

Student efforts were coordinated through Nazareth Farm, a Catholic community of volunteers whose mission is to eliminate sub-standard housing through home repairs. During their week-long stays, the young people worked on basic housing needs for people who cannot afford repairs or can’t make repairs themselves. That included everything from roofing repairs to drywalling to cutting firewood and painting. All St. Francis students came away with an appreciation for many things that they sometimes take for granted in their Illinois suburban lives.

Commented Lindsey Schmitt, “Immersing yourself in physical work to help provide basic needs for others puts a different perspective on life back home. To accomplish it with a big group of volunteers from other states also gives you an appreciation for what ‘community’ truly means.”

Michael Smith added, “All of us experienced a change in perspective. Each of us has tried to do something different since we have arrived home … some small step toward becoming the people we know we can be.”

Nazareth Farm has served the families of West Virginia’s Doddridge and surrounding counties for 26 years. From January through August, teams of students from throughout the country spend a week helping those in the rural Appalachian community.

Nazareth Farm does not advertise for volunteers. The weeklong experience of service, simplicity, community and prayer has become nationally popular through word of mouth. Young people are enticed by the idea of putting their faith into action. An annual lottery is held to determine participants.

Math Mentor Merits Recognition

St. Francis High School educator receives teaching excellence award

Wheaton, IL – 3 July 2006 – Amy Sweig of Glen Ellyn might not have received her degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering this year if not for the persistence and dedication of St. Francis High School math teacher, Sue Kolasinski.

As a result of Sweig’s nomination essay, the Milwaukee School of Engineering named Kolasinski a 2006 recipient of the prestigious VIP Excellence in High School Teaching Award.

Citing Kolasinski’s lasting influence on her math studies and career choice, Sweig described her as “the teacher who saw a diamond in the rough.” At times, the student struggled during three years of high school math courses, but her teacher’s “constant patience and confidence in me to be succeed never faded.”

Kolasinski has been on the faculty of St. Francis High School in Wheaton for 23 years. She is currently the mathematics department chair and coaches the school’s math team that has placed in the Top 10 of Illinois State schools during the last 13 years. Kolasinski resides in St. Charles, Illinois.
