Time Out For Reading

Sept. | Nov. | Feb | Mar | April

Time Out for Reading is a program designed to provide students and staff with a time to read
for personal pleasure, enjoyment and relaxation in hopes that this time will spur the reader
to set aside in their daily life to continue the habit of reading. It is also a time for students
and staff to come together in a relaxed atmosphere to discuss and share ideas about
a common reading experience.
Refreshments and thematic decorations help to create a
mood conducive to open sharing and the creation of new relationships.

The 2007-08 schedule provides for 6 TOFR days and book discussion title suggestions are welcome and encouraged from every member of the school community. This month the book for discussion is "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J. K. Rowling.  Pumpkin juice, chocolate frogs and Bernie Bott's Every Flavor Beans will help make the discussion lively and fun.

Time Out for Reading Selection
Christine
By
Stephen King

The selection for Time Out for Reading on Feb. 7 is “Christine” by Stephen King. This is a different kind of love story. It was love at first sight. From the moment seventeen-year-old Arnie Cunningham saw Christine, he knew he would do anything to possess her. But Christine is no lady. She is Stephen King's ultimate vehicle of terror.

Arnie has fallen in love with a 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine. But Christine is no ordinary car. She has a violent history and a life of her own, and she is jealous and malevolent. As she and Arnie become more obsessed with each other, bad things start happening to the people around Arnie.

Few authors have tapped into our secret fears as adeptly as Stephen King, Master of the Macabre and one of the most widely read novelists writing today. With his trademark blend of fantasy, horror, and psychological suspense, this prolific and immensely popular contemporary writer continues to remind us that evil is still a potent force in the world.

Join us on Feb. 7 for an interesting discussion of what can happen when obsession and jealousy are mistaken for love and devotion.

Time Out for Reading Selection
The Breadwinner
By
Deborah Ellis

The selection for Time Out for Reading on Nov.2 is “The Bread Winner” by Deborah Ellis. Set in Afghanistan, this is a story of how a young girl helps her family to survive after the arrest of her father, despite the Taliban’s strict limitations on a woman's freedom and behavior.

Imagine living in a country in which women and girls are not allowed to leave the house without a man. Imagine having to wear clothes that cover every part of your body, including your face, whenever you go out.

In this powerful and realistic tale, eleven-year-old Parvana lives with her family in one room of a bombed-out apartment building in Kabul , Afghanistan 's capital city during the Taliban rule. Parvana's father- a history teacher until his school was bombed and his health destroyed- works from a blanket on the ground in the marketplace, reading letters for people who cannot read or write. One day he is arrested for the crime of having a foreign education, and the family is left without someone who can earn money or even shop for food. As conditions in the family grow desperate, only one solution emerges. Forbidden by the Taliban government to earn money as a girl, Parvana must transform herself into a boy and become the breadwinner.
