President's Letter

Well, if you missed out on the lst Annual “Taking Chances for St. Francis – Casino Night/Auction”, you missed a night filled with good food, good friends, and a variety of things to do from gambling, silent auction, raffles, etc. The energy that filled the room was indescribable. A huge THANK YOU to all the myriads of people who helped put this extraordinary event together. I would especially like to thank Jeanne and Pat Rosmonowski, our chairs of the event, for “taking a chance” to run something of this magnitude for the first time and turning it into an event that attendees say they can’t wait until next year. Special thank you’s to Larry Baker, Jeff Gerdeman, Paul Johnson, Chris Konchel, Trish Lynch, Debbie Quirk and John Grossman for all their help and support. Also, thank you to Paul Linden, Ellen Polzin and Diane Mercandante for putting up with us taking over their office. Again, Thank You to all who supported this event – St. Francis truly is a community of futures founded on family.

The school spring musical “Parade” was an amazing production that will go down as one of the best – it was a very moving performance. Congratulations to Ms. Brady and the cast and crew for taking the courage to provide such a profound experience to the St. Francis community. KUDOS to all.

This past month we were all blessed with the opportunity to either attend the Daddy/Daughter Dance or the Mother/Son Brunch. Both of these are special events to cherish with our children. I encourage all to try to attend next year. Thank you to Susan Fairhead (Daddy/Daughter); Marsha Kadow and Mr. Page (Mother/Son Brunch) for coordinating these events.

As we enter the official days of spring, we are reminded of how quickly the end of school year is approaching (and how happy most of us are to see this dreaded winter come to an end). Spring sports, planning for prom, senior celebration, graduation, One Act Play festival, and the band/choral concert are well underway. Please take some time to come out and support our Spring athletic teams, as well as our performing arts.I wish everyone a very Blessed Easter and a safe spring break!

Senior Celebration

ATTENTION SENIOR PARENTS!  April 12th is only 23 days away!  Don't let your child miss out on the get together of the year.  Senior Celebration is an event they will want to see and be seen at!  If you haven't turned in your child's paperwork yet, please do so ASAP to Pam Zumm.  Also, remember to get in the pictures of your senior to Paula Schatz.

We are still in need of some volunteers for the night of the event, especially after the midnight hour.  If you haven't yet volunteered and are willing to help, please contact Pam Zumm at pzumm@aol.com.  We also need help with clean up from 2:00-3:30.  The more hands we have, the lighter the load.

Also, the decorating committee is looking for Chicago sports memorabilia to use for decorations.  If anyone has any Chicago team pennants, hats, jerseys, etc. that you are willing to let us borrow, please contact Terry Neigel or Deb Joseph.

Our next Senior Celebration meeting will be Monday, April 7th at 7:00 pm at the Wheaton Community Center.  All parents are invited to attend!  JUNIOR PARENTS!  Please feel free to drop by the Community Center on April 12th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to check out Senior Celebration.  In the blink of an eye your junior will be a senior and you will be planning their Senior Celebration.

LIBRARY NEWS

Book Donation Program

As we did last year, the St. Francis Library is sponsoring a Book Donation Program. This program and the Senior Bookplate Design Competition are two programs that work together to ensure that the St Francis High School library is able to provide our students and teachers with the most up-to-date resources and to prepare for our new library. The theme for this year’s program is St. Francis High School: Building Our Future. The Senior Bookplate Design Competition encourages students to submit a bookplate design that exemplifies their pride and commitment to the St. Francis community, while the Book Donation Program offers parents, teachers, school clubs, teams, organizations and local businesses a way to permanently honor an individual, a team or the entire class of 2008. Each donated book, audio book or video will be affixed with a commemorative bookplate that was designed by this year’s Bookplate Design Competition winner, senior, Samantha Joseph.

This year’s program will run through August 1, 2008 . During this time, those wishing to participate are invited to visit the SFHS website and choose books from the wish list. All purchases are tax-deductible and may be eligible for employer gift-matching programs.

Library Promotions and Contests

During the week of Feb. 25- Mar. 1, the Library celebrated Black History Month with a trivia contest. Students and teachers were invited to test their knowledge regarding the African-Americans who have made contributions to the US and to the advancement of African-Americans. Over 60 contestants were successful and were awarded a prize of either cookies or chips.

During the month of March the library is celebrating the accomplishments of women as part of Women’s History Month, and in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we are featuring the heritage and contributions of Ireland and the Irish.

Time Out for Reading

April 24th will be the last Time Out for Reading day for the2007-08 school year. The selection for the discussion will be A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This story, like Hosseini’s first bestseller, The Kite Runner, is set in war-torn, Afghanistan -- from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding. Told from the perspective of Laila and Mariam, who have been brought together by tradition and war, the novel explores how hopes, plans and happiness are defined by the political events that surround them.

There are also links to CA- MRSA on the Wellness office website. If your athlete has a skin infection he must see the nurse or the athletic trainer.

FEMALE SPORT-RELATED HEALTH PROBLEMS

Female Athlete Triad : The long term health effect of intense training of the female athlete has come under scrutiny by the health care profession. The three components of female athlete triad are disordered eating, amenorrhea (the absence of menstruation), and premature osteoporosis. Girls at highest risk are those in sports that emphasize thin appearance, subjective scoring (figure skating and gymnastics), weight categories for participation or that use contour-revealing clothing.

Disordered eating may take the form of restriction of food intake, bulimia, to anorexia. While the incident of disordered eating is 5% to 10% in the general population it is 16% to 72% among female athletes depending on the sport. Amenorrhea is more likely seen when a female quickly increases training and there is a relative caloric deficiency due to inadequate nutritional intake for the amount of energy expended. Amenorrhea is usually due to an estrogen deficiency that can lead to the decrease in bone mass. The osteoporosis is exacerbated by poor nutrition and lack of estrogen.

ACL Injury : Anterior cruciate ligament injury is 4 to 8 times more common in females than in males. Highest injury rate occurs at ages 15-25 years. Sudden buckling and popping of the knee, followed by collapse and pain are signs of injury. Basketball, soccer and volleyball (pivoting sports) have the highest incidents. Research is showing that estrogen levels and variations during menstrual cycles may have an effect on the risk.

Next month, male sport related health problems.

GRADUATION PHOTO DISC

By Mr. Mark McCleary

I will be taking photos of this year’s graduation program. This will include events before, during and after graduation such as the graduates preparing for the service, the choir and band, the procession, the Mass, speakers, diploma ceremony and random pictures outside (weather permitting). I will take a picture of each graduate as he/she receives his/her diploma. I have been doing this type of photography for 15 years.

I will put these on to a compact disc (CD) which you can view on a computer or use to make prints at any photo processing center, i.e. Osco, Wal-Mart, Target, or any private camera company. The CD will be professionally produced and mailed during the summer. I hope to make the first mailing in late June.

The cost is a contribution to the Beverly McCleary Scholarship Fund. My sons and I have established this fund with contributions received in her memory. This is a scholarship that is awarded to an incoming freshman and is renewable each year. It is given annually. All contributions will go directly to the scholarship fund. My sons and I will cover the cost of production and shipping. Checks should be made out to St. Francis High School.

Please complete the form and return to: Mr. Mark McCleary, % St. Francis High School, 2130 W. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. There is a link on the St. Francis website for this form. If you have any questions please contact me at mmccleary@sfhsnet.org.

Thank you. It has been my pleasure and privilege to have been a part of you and your son’s and daughter’s educational experience at St. Francis High School.
