Congratulations to two senior students who were recently selected to receive Good Citizen Awards. These students were nominated by the faculty and selected by a vote of the senior class.  The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award will go to Nikki Zayner and the Sons of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award goes to Peter Malak.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM THE DUPAGE COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
Current H1N1 guidance can be found at www.protectdupage.org. Guidance on Flu Severity and Priority Groups can be found on this website. Vaccination scheduling will be posted on this site when clinics are confirmed.

In addition the Health Department has established a public 24/7 Flu Hotline telephone number (630) 221-7600.

H1N1
Vaccination against 2009 H1N1 should begin as soon as the vaccine is available and continue throughout the influenza season, into December, January, and beyond. I would encourage you to have your child vaccinated against the seasonal flu and H1N1. Below are the target groups (should receive the vaccine first) for the H1N1vaccine. Please note that our students fall into one of these target groups.
  • Pregnant women,
  • People who live with or provide care for infants younger than 6 months (e.g., parents, siblings, and day care providers),
  • Health care and emergency medical services personnel,
  • People 6 months through 24 years of age
  • People 25 years through 64 years of age who have certain medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.
In July of this year the CDC found that the median age of persons with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 infection was 12 years of age. The median age of hospitalized patients was 18 years of age.

Please, vaccinate your children; it's the best defense that you can give them against these two possibly serious diseases.

"Jeepers Creepers"- St. Francis is again Collecting Old Peepers!
Do you have unused eye glasses or sun glasses around the house? If so, donate your old eye glasses and sun glasses to a good cause. This year St. Francis High School will again collect old glasses for "Sight Night". Volunteers will then repair and classify the collected eye glasses by prescription and hand deliver them to people in developing countries who need eye glasses but cannot afford them.

Also, we invite St. Francis students to collect old eye glasses in their neighborhoods on Halloween while they are "trick-or-treating". Please talk with your son and daughter about this opportunity to collect more than just candy this Halloween. Free Trick-or Treat collection kits and a drop-off box for old glasses is available in the Guidance & Counseling Department. For more information, please contact Mrs. Rupp at extension 104 or at arupp@sfhsnet.org. Please drop off any eye glasses by the end of October.

"Go Green, Live Green!"
Green Roof Fundraiser

The St. Francis Girls' Volleyball Team in conjunction with the Evergreen Club and Science department will be helping to raise awareness and promote environmental consciousness and Earth Day through their "Go Green and Live Green" fundraiser.

The two-part fundraiser involves a special home volleyball game against Marian Central Catholic on Monday October 19th, at 5:00pm & 6:00pm.  Also, "Go Green, Live Green" T-shirts and nylon Earth-saver "grocery" bags, which eliminate tons of annual plastic in landfills and destroys trees for paper bags, will be sold. All are invited to come out and help "Paint the Stands Green" by purchasing and wearing the "Go Green, Live Green" T-shirts for $5 and the Earth-saver bags for $10 or 2 for $15.  The volleyball game will also feature a split-the-pot drawing and a raffle for six gift baskets.  The Evergreen Club will be planning events to co-ordinate with April's Earth Day.

The proceeds from this event will benefit the green roof on the soon-to-be-built science suite and learning resource center. The inspiration for this effort sprang from the passing of the beloved Mrs. Mary Feltes, the St. Francis Evergreen Club moderator and Science Department Chairperson.  It is the school's desire to keep her environmentally-conscious work alive.
