Notes
from the Nurse
IT'S NATIONAL INFLUENZA
VACCINE WEEK January 10-16 is National
Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW). NIVW was
established to highlight the importance of
continuing influenza vaccination, as well as
fostering greater use of flu vaccine after the
holiday season.
Since 2009 H1N1 disease is likely
to continue, NIVW is an important opportunity to
maintain or increase the number of people who get
the 2009 H1N1 vaccine at a time when demand for
vaccine usually drops significantly. Though this
has been an unprecedented year in terms of the
number of people who have received flu
vaccinations, most people still have not gotten
the 2009 H1N1 vaccine - there is still room for
improvement among every age and risk group.
Influenza is unpredictable and we do not know the
likelihood of a future wave of 2009 H1N1
influenza, but we do know that vaccination is the
single best way to reduce the health impact of
influenza. Source:

Boys
Basketball Sponsors "Jimmy V Night"
February 6th ~ a cancer research fund-raising
event
Hello St. Francis community,
My
name is Jack Spangler, and I am a senior on the
St. Francis Boy's Varsity Basketball Team. Cancer
is a disease that has undoubtedly affected the
lives of friends and loved ones close to each of
us.(Personally, I've lost three grandparents to
cancer.) It is why we, the basketball team, have
taken it upon ourselves to host a cancer research
fund-raising event called "Jimmy V Night." Who is
Jimmy V?
Jim Valvano used to be head
basketball coach at North Carolina State
University. On March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano received
the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 1993 ESPY
awards (the academy awards of sports). His speech
was one that is still remembered today. He talked
of his courageous battle with cancer and how he
was setting up the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer
Research. That foundation still exists today
having raised more than $90 million for more than
300 cancer research projects.
The
first annual SFHS Jimmy V Night will be
February 6th during our home game vs.
IMSA. We will raise funds for the Jimmy V
Foundation as follows:
- Selling event T-shirts. Our goal is to sell
500 T-shirts to students, parents and friends of
SFHS;
- Charging an extra dollar for admission that
night, with the extra buck going to the Jimmy V
Foundation;
- Selling raffle tickets for the chance to win
a pair of tickets to an upcoming Blackhawks game
and a Cubs game this summer. The drawing will be
held at halftime; and,
- A voluntary donation box at the admission
gate and concession stand the night of the game.
(Donations can also be mailed to school with
checks made out to "The V
Foundation")
T-shirts will be sold at lunch during the
week leading up to the game. We are also hoping
to have them available for sale at our home game
vs. ACC (Jan. 22). Each STUDENT purchasing a
T-shirt will also receive one complimentary raffle
ticket. Additional raffle tickets will be sold at
$2 apiece or 3 for $5 during the school T-shirt
sale, at the Jan. 16 (IC) and Jan. 22 (ACC) home
games, and during the first half the night of the
event.
We encourage you all to attend this
event if possible. It is a tradition that we are
trying to establish with the Boy's basketball
program. Many have been touched by the efforts of
the Girl's Volleyball Team and their "Volley For
The Cure" fund-raising events. Now it's our
turn to give back as well. Hope to see you there.
And always remember..."Don't give
up... Don't ever give up." -Jim
Valvano
Sincerely,
Jack
