Quote of the Week: "Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." From the Gettysburg Address: (November 19, 1863) ~ Abraham Lincoln

Congratulations and Good Luck to the St. Francis Choir, Music Ensemble and Band who are traveling to Disney World this weekend. They have been selected to perform in Disney's Magic Music Days program. The Choir and Music Ensemble will perform at the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney; the Marching Band will march in Disney World's Magic Kingdom March Parade.  There are 97 St. Francis music students and 10 faculty and parent chaperones attending this trip. We wish them safe travels!

Requiring Immunization for School Attendance:

States have the right to enact and enforce individual compulsory immunization statutes. However, states do vary in their requirements. Students who fail to meet the designated state immunization requirements can be excluded from school until the necessary immunizations are obtained. Enforcing necessary immunizations dates back to the 1800's when Massachusetts required citizens to be immunized against smallpox. Then in an effort to improve childhood immunizations, laws were enacted requiring certain immunizations as a prerequisite for school entry.

The recommended (not all are required for school entry in Illinois) schedule of immunizations comes out annually in January. Click here to view the recommended vaccinations for children ages 11-19. Noteworthy is the updated information for Varicella, Hepatitis A and HPV vaccines.

February Time Out for Reading

This month's Time Out for Reading selection is The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.  This 2009 Newberry Medal winner will be discussed on Wed. Feb. 24thth, not Thurs. Feb 25th. Make sure to get a copy and get ready for a magical discussion. All students, teachers and parents are welcome.

"Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack-who has already killed Bod's family . . . Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times bestselling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages." (HarperCollins Publishers)
